As a major partner of National Science Week, CSIRO is proud to provide events and curriculum-aligned resources for teachers and their classes to celebrate one of the biggest weeks on the science and technology calendar.

Celebrate National Science Week 12 - 20 August.

Access a range of free events for teachers and students and learn about some of the real-world science powering Australia.

Dance with a Digital Human: (Years 1-9)

This session went ahead on 15-16 August 2023, but you can still access a replay to use in class through our Teacher Resources page.

These one-hour sessions showcase how technology is applied to sport science to help athletes perform at their best. Students can hear from CSIRO’s Data 61 scientists about artificial intelligence and motion capture techniques to transform humans into digital humans.

Students can learn the National Science Week dance, with Dizzy the digital dancer, and also hear from a professional athlete. Sessions are tailored to age groups (Years 1 – 3, Years 4-6 and Years 7-9).

Storytime from a Science Ship: (Foundation - Year 3)

Teachers can still download a teaching resource PDF (667 KB) with curriculum aligned activities to complement this publication.

Classes from around the country joined us online to see our special guest, wildlife biologist and author Dr Vanessa Pirotta, read her beautiful book, The Voyage of Whale and Calf. The Voyage of Whale and Calf explores humpback whale migration – plunge below the surface to learn more about the lives of these magnificent marine mammals! This special event will take place aboard our blue-water research vessel, RV Investigator.

Virtual Tour of RV Investigator: (Years 4+)

This session went ahead on 17 August 2023, but you can still view the recording of the Virtual Tour

All aboard RV Investigator! Join CSIRO marine biologist Dr Ben Arthur and renowned wildlife scientist, Dr Vanessa Pirotta on a virtual tour of our blue-water research vessel, RV Investigator. Ben and Vanessa will take you above and below decks to show you the amazing features of this super science ship, and share what it’s like to live and work on an advanced ocean going research vessel.

National Science Quiz: (Years 5+)

This session went ahead on 27 August 2023, but you can still access a replay to use in class.

Now in its 8th year, the National Science Quiz returned for 2023. The National Science Quiz is a collaboration between the ARC Centres of Excellence, government agencies and universities. CSIRO is proud to be partnering with the National Science Quiz as part of our National Science Week activities.
