16 November 2018 News Release

Australia's national science agency, the Commonwealth Science Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), and the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding at a special ceremony in Darwin today.

CSIRO Energy Director Dr Tim Finnigan said CSIRO has worked with JOGMEC on a number of energy and resource-related projects, and the MOU represents a step towards a deeper level of collaboration.

"This collaboration will encourage joint research activities in areas related to carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) that support the hydrogen value chain, and in unconventional gas resources."

"Over the years CSIRO has enjoyed a long standing relationship with Japan through strong university links, exchange programs and research collaborations."

"I am delighted that today's MOU signing will add to this."

"Importantly, this initiative contributes to CSIRO's broader efforts in contributing to the development of northern Australia," he said.

JOGMEC Chairman and CEO Mr Tetsuhiro Hosono welcomed the opportunity to work closer with Australia's national science agency which has a strong record in delivering research and technical solutions across the entire energy domain.

JOGMEC also has a number of different commercial interests in Australia spanning across different states including Ichthys LNG project and Wheatstone LNG project.

JOGMEC is a Japanese Government agency acting in accordance with the policies of Japan, to support Japanese private companies involved in exploration, development and production of natural resources such as oil and natural gas through financial, informational and technical assistance in order to contribute to secure the stable supply of energy to Japan.

CSIRO is Australia's national science agency, and is one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world.
