The energy sector in Australia is undergoing a major transition. Disruption across the sector is demanding new energy science and digital technologies, with profound impacts across the economy.
CSIRO's energy mission is for Australia to lead the world in the development of technologies and collaborative knowledge creation that drive low-cost electrification and decarbonisation of our major industries and exports in a competitive low-carbon global economy.
Our three research programs
- Energy Systems - addresses the challenge of transitioning Australia's current centralised electricity grid system to a low-emissions, more distributed future state, while maintaining energy security, affordability and reliability.
- Energy Technologies - conducts analysis, design, development activities to support the industry and transport sectors achieve emission goals through integrating low carbon solutions.
- Energy Resources - focuses on identifying and enabling opportunities regarding the processing and emission mitigation of Australia's hydrocarbon energy resources, primarily oil and gas, and the associated environmental and social impacts.
Our research capabilities and impact
Our impact is working to progress the electricity transition, help decarbonise industry and transport, and develop clean carbon management technologies.
Insights into our energy research capabilities, how and why we do it and the impact we are helping deliver are presented interactively here
