Atmosphere

We work to understand the role of the atmosphere in the Earth system and provide comprehensive, rigorous science to help Australia understand, respond to and plan for a changing climate.

Biodiversity

We are working to halt the decline in Australia's biodiversity. Our goal is to build better understanding of our species and ecosystems for better management.

Biosecurity

We are working to protect Australia from biosecurity threats arising from global travel and trade and exacerbated by urbanisation and climate change. Our goal is to deliver solutions to ensure Australia is prepared and ready to respond to existing and emerging risks to protect our environment, our agricultural industry and our way of life.

Critical minerals

As the largest minerals research and development organisation in Australia and one of the largest in the world, CSIRO is ideally placed to seize the opportunities presented to Australia by the global energy transition and respond to critical mineral demand.

Ecosystems

Australia’s natural species and ecosystems are highly vulnerable to climate change and will have difficulty adapting to the rate and extent of projected changes. Many species are at risk because they are restricted in geographical and climatic range.

Land

We have the knowledge to protect, manage and restore whole landscapes. Our researchers work across entire landscapes, with a deep understanding of interactions between landform, climate, soil, biota and human activities.

Oceans

The oceans around us affect almost all aspects of our lives - from our weather and climate, through to our food and well-being. Australia marine estate is the third largest in the world, and is highly diverse with many unique components.

Water

Our research aims to help Australia better manage its river basins and groundwater resources, and improve social, economic and environmental benefits through water resources management. We also apply our expertise to international water management projects.
