Understanding the geology of deep weathered and transported cover regions is problematic due to the lack of fresh bedrock outcrop and their complex weathering histories which have been developing for millions of years, and the basement rocks can be buried hundreds of meters.
Forests in the landscape
We're developing strategies for keeping Australia's forests productive and healthy into the future, so that they continue to provide us with a range of products and services like timber, habitat and clean water. This research contributes to carbon sequestration and forest sustainability.
Soil, water and landscapes
Australia's soils and landscapes constitute one of the country's most valuable assets, critical to food production, sustainable agriculture and our health. Our research spans national and international scales to inform land use planning, policy options and natural resource assessment.
Mapping Australia's soils
Together with our partners, we've developed detailed digital maps of the country’s soils in an easily-accessible format.
National Soil Archive
The CSIRO National Soil Archive maintains a collection of soil specimens from across Australia. The Archive is an important resource for future soil research, storing over 71,000 soil specimens, collected from around 9,500 sites Australia-wide.
Soil mapping & land suitability
Soil data are considered the most important environmental factor determining the suitability of land for agriculture. We've developed a method for systematically evaluating land suitability over large areas at the regional scale.
Northern Australia research
CSIRO's robust research informs decision-making to realise the significant opportunities for the region's sustainable development.
History in northern Australia
CSIRO has a 70 year history of delivering innovation and impact in northern Australia.
Unlocking the potential of northern Australia
Northern Australia is a very productive part of the country with substantial opportunities for further targeted development. Our research is guiding the continued sustainable development of the region.
Land tenure in northern Australia
Changes in land tenure arrangements offer significant opportunities to drive diverse investment in the sustainable development of northern Australia.
