The importance of responsible AI research

The game is changing, and so are we.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing our world.  It can make fast work of huge amounts of data, speed up processes, and collaborate with humans to provide a better outcome than either could create on their own. However, if not done in an ethical way, the development of AI technology can come with significant risks.

Responsible AI practices need to be developed in parallel with the world’s rapidly accelerating AI capability to keep pace with the change, and ensure responsible AI becomes a competitive advantage of Australian industry. We can do this by embedding responsible AI practices into everything we do.

Our vision is to be among the world's top five in responsible AI science and technology, making Australia’s adoption of AI safe, secure, and reliable. Responsible AI is an ethical duty and central pillar of our AI work and strategy to develop and enable frontier responsible AI science and technology for Australia and the world.

Deepening scientific understanding in this area will be important to ensuring Australia can maintain an advantage in this space and successfully develop and adopt AI solutions. Our unique approach includes:

  1. System-level engineering practices, guardrails, and supply chain accountability, rather than AI model-level considerations.
  2. Tailored responsible AI for both small AI models and large frontier/foundation model-based systems.
  3. Enabling decision-makers and communities - especially minority groups - to make informed, responsible AI choices.

Our research

From research through to industry adoption

Moving from research to AI adoption and industry support, CSIRO hosts the National AI Centre (NAIC), which also has responsible AI as part of its remit.

In March 2023, NAIC launched the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network (RAIN) to support Australian companies to use and create AI responsibly. As Knowlege Partners in RAIN, our responsible AI researchers share tools and advice to benefit industry adoption.
