Background
T-Provenance's smart tracking software records transactions on fresh produce from paddock-to-plate
Adelaide-based AgTech start-up, T-Provenance, recognised the need for enhanced food quality and trust in the food supply chain for domestic and export food trade. As a result, the company sought ways to improve information on fresh produce from paddock-to-plate. T-Provenance has developed a smart tracking software solution, Trust Provenance, to enhance authenticity, traceability and reduce waste in Australian food industries. Autonomous Internet of Things (IoT) measurements, coupled with information feeds from various integrated systems from supply chain partners, provide a new level of transparency in the supply chain. This removes blind spots, provides enhanced stock flow information to all parties, and assists in the identification of produce at risk of degradation.
Challenge
Achieving a heightened level of data security and designing an intuitive user interface
T-Provenance sought to secure and store all information datapoints using blockchain architecture, a decentralised ledger that provides heightened levels of data security. The purpose of this was to maintain absolute data integrity, allowing all stakeholders to have a new level of trust.
T-Provenance engaged CSIRO researchers within Data61 to develop a working prototype ready for beta use with trial partners, and to design an intuitive user interface. The platform specifically targeted the Australian fresh produce sector.
Solution
Developed an innovative platform that securely records transactions between parties along the supply chain
Data61's blockchain specialists, led by Dr Ingo Weber, were able to develop a prototype platform that was integrated into the Trust Provenance system. The innovative platform securely records transactions between parties along the supply chain. This allows end users to view all data captured on the animal from growth through to processing.
Data61 are leaders in blockchain technology in Australia, and the technical inputs and advice they provided, assisted our technical blockchain team to enhance their technical knowledge and blockchain process understanding. This helps to make Australian fresh produce supply chains more effective and efficient, meaning higher quality produce to the supermarket shelf and less overall food waste, which has flow on benefits to the environment.

By creating a more transparent supply chain, T-Provenance has the potential to help safeguard Australia's reputation for safe high-quality produce and the export revenue this generates.
The success of this CSIRO Kick-Start co-funded project, assisted T-Provenance with attracting additional funding and industry partnerships, including a $300,000+ grant from the CRC for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA). Trust Provenance is currently being utilised in the Australian fresh produce industry.
