With AI and climate, we are dealing with a problem space that is very broad and a piece of technology that can mean many things.

AI for Climate R&D Roadmap Consultation paper coverFollowing the AI for Climate Symposium held on 16–17 October 2024, CSIRO has released the AI for Climate R&D Roadmap: Consultation Paper. It’s a conversation starter on where and how Australia can strategically leverage AI to accelerate climate action.

We want to hear your views on how the Australian R&D ecosystem, including CSIRO, can work together to use AI in adapting to a changing climate and support mitigation efforts.

AI is already being used in a range of climate adaptation and mitigation applications. This report draws on insights from experts across government, industry, academia and the not-for-profit sector to outline a market-driven vision for future AI R&D in climate mitigation and adaptation.

It highlights current and emerging opportunities, showcasing real-world and cross-sector applications of AI. These range from improving climate and weather forecasting, to decarbonising heavy-emitting industries and responding to natural disaster emergencies. It also identifies untapped areas where AI could deliver even greater impact and support responses to common climate challenges impacting multiple sectors.

Importantly, the report also considers the risks and ethical considerations of using AI in climate applications, and the steps needed to ensure AI is deployed safely, responsibly, and effectively.
